I posted earlier that males sing, that is one way to know males from females, another way is by blowing the vent area which is between the legs in the front part and you will see the females keep that area clean and with no feathers and the males have feathers and is not straight like hens, see the pictures below.

Canaries have been around for a long time, males sing and females mostly do not.
